Each domestic refrigerator-freezer has what we call "Star rating". Star rating defines what is the storage temperature of the freezer compartment is. The lower the storage temperature temperature in freezer, the longest frozen food life is as the activity of micro-organisms is reduced.
One star refrigerator-freezer has a storage temperature lower than or equal -6 C.
Two stars refrigerator-freezer has a storage temperature lower than or equal -12 C.
Three stars refrigerator-freezer has a storage temperature lower than or equal -18 C.
Four stars refrigerator-freezer has a storage temperature lower than or equal -18 C, but has a freezing capacity higher than 4.5 kg/100 L of the freezer's volume.
A question is: why freezers are rated using stars?!!!!
The answer simply is: it is inspired by the snow | ice flake shape under microscope which in most cases have the shape of the star.

Thank you for sharing this information I was puzzled by the white snowflake followed by 3 black ones. No where I looked seemed to have this clearly spelled out so thanks for clarifying this.
ReplyDeleteSame problem for me. It’s ambiguous. Could mean 1 out of 4 stars or 3 out of 4 stars but 4 stars with 3 highlighted. I just don’t get it.
ReplyDeleteSame thing here. I was puzzled by the 4 stars, one in black and 3 others in white. Scoured the internet for answers and found none till I stumbled upon this article.
ReplyDeleteVery helpful as the symbols can be confusing/misleading. Thank You for your help.
ReplyDeleteFor the 4-Star (snowflake) symbol - the reason 1 is black and 3 are white - is because 3-star freezers are only meant to be used for 'bought-as-frozen' food storage. Introducing fresh food 'to-be-frozen' into them causes unacceptable temperature rises which is not good for the coolant in those units with that 3-star rating. Therefore the 4-Star symbol (1 black, 3 white) means the unit functions in exactly the same temperature range as a 3-Star, but the extra black-star denotes the further function - in that it is specifically designed to be able to freeze fresh produce safely and rapidly, preserving the food's nutrients and without damaging the unit.
